Not all used washer and dryer brands are created equal. After cleaning, testing, and delivering over 1,000 units across the greater Austin area, we've seen firsthand which brands hold up and which ones don't.
Here's our honest ranking of the best used washer and dryer brands, based on real-world reliability we've observed in our shop.
1. Whirlpool — The Workhorse
Whirlpool is our top recommendation for anyone buying a used washer and dryer. These machines are built with simplicity in mind, which means fewer things can go wrong. The top-load washers with agitators are especially durable — we regularly see Whirlpool units from 5-8 years ago that still run like new after a thorough cleaning and inspection.
Why they're great used: Simple mechanical design, widely available replacement parts, and consistent build quality across model years. Whirlpool doesn't change their core engineering every year, so even older models perform reliably.
What to watch for: The newer high-efficiency top-load models (without agitators) can be more finicky than the traditional agitator models. When in doubt, go with the agitator.
2. Maytag — Built to Last
Maytag is owned by Whirlpool and shares much of the same engineering, but with heavier-duty components. The Maytag Commercial Technology (MCT) line is especially impressive — these are essentially commercial-grade machines built for home use.
Why they're great used: Maytag over-engineers their machines. The extra-thick drum, heavy-duty motor mounts, and commercial-grade components mean these units age gracefully. A 5-year-old Maytag often looks and runs better than a 2-year-old budget brand.
What to watch for: Maytag front-load washers can develop door seal issues over time. We always inspect and replace seals when needed before delivery.
3. Kenmore — The Reliable Standard
Kenmore has been a household name for decades, and for good reason. What most people don't realize is that Kenmore doesn't actually manufacture their own appliances — they're made by Whirlpool, LG, or other manufacturers depending on the model. This means many Kenmore washers and dryers are essentially re-badged versions of proven designs.
Why they're great used: Consistent quality, easy to find parts, and great value. Kenmore units often cost less on the used market than their brand-name equivalents, even though they're the same machine underneath.
What to watch for: Check the model number to identify the actual manufacturer. Kenmore models starting with "110" are made by Whirlpool (a good sign), while models starting with "796" are made by LG.
4. GE (General Electric) — Solid All-Around
GE washers and dryers are reliable middle-of-the-road machines. They're not flashy, but they get the job done consistently. The top-load washers are particularly dependable, and GE's electric dryers are some of the most straightforward to maintain.
Why they're great used: GE focuses on practical features rather than gimmicks. Their machines tend to have fewer electronic control boards (which are the most expensive thing to fail on modern appliances), making them less risky as used purchases.
What to watch for: Some GE front-load models from the 2018-2020 era had control board issues. We test every unit thoroughly, but it's worth noting.
5. Samsung — High-Tech, Higher Risk
Samsung makes feature-rich, visually appealing washers and dryers. Their VRT (Vibration Reduction Technology) is genuinely impressive, and the machines look great in any laundry room. However, Samsung's complexity is a double-edged sword in the used market.
Why they can be great used: When Samsung units work, they work beautifully. The large drum capacities, quiet operation, and modern features make them excellent machines. And because they depreciate faster than simpler brands, you can get a lot of machine for your money.
What to watch for: Samsung's electronic control boards and sensors are more complex than competitors, which means more potential failure points. We're selective about which Samsung units we take in — every one gets a thorough electronics inspection before we put it on the floor.
6. LG — Similar to Samsung
LG shares many of the same strengths and weaknesses as Samsung. Their front-load washers, particularly the LG TROMM line, are well-built machines with great capacity. LG's Direct Drive motor technology is genuinely innovative and reduces the number of moving parts.
Why they can be great used: The Direct Drive motor eliminates the belt and pulley system, which means one less thing to break. LG front-loaders also tend to be very water-efficient.
What to watch for: LG's electronic controls can be finicky, and replacement parts can be expensive. Similar to Samsung, we're selective about which LG units we stock.
7. Amana — Budget-Friendly and Simple
Amana (also owned by Whirlpool) is the no-frills option. These machines don't have fancy features or smart connectivity — they just wash and dry your clothes. And that simplicity is actually their biggest advantage as used machines.
Why they're great used: With fewer electronic components and a straightforward mechanical design, Amana washers and dryers have less that can go wrong. They're our most affordable sets and are perfect for rental properties, first apartments, or anyone who just needs a reliable machine without the extras.
What to watch for: Amana machines tend to be smaller capacity than premium brands. Make sure the size works for your household before buying.
The Bottom Line
For used washers and dryers, simpler is usually better. Brands like Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore that prioritize mechanical reliability over electronic features tend to age the best. That doesn't mean Samsung or LG are bad choices — it just means you need to be more selective, which is exactly what we do at Longhorn Washer and Dryer.
