New Isn't Better.
It's Just More Expensive.

Big-box stores spend millions convincing you to overpay for machines built to fail. Here are the facts they hope you never see.

๐Ÿ”ง

Older Machines Were Built to Last.
New Ones Are Built to Be Replaced.

It's not just nostalgia โ€” real research backs it up. A 2025 peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology tracked appliance lifespans in households from 1940 through 2022. Their finding? Washing machine lifespans dropped from an average of 19.2 years to just 10.6 years โ€” a 45% decline that started accelerating in the 1990s.

Repair technicians tell the same story: machines from the 1970sโ€“2000s routinely lasted 20โ€“30 years because they were mechanically simple โ€” metal gears, steel tubs, and parts you could actually replace. Today's machines are packed with electronic sensors, plastic components, and sealed drums that make repair either impossible or more expensive than buying new.

The focus has shifted from long-term durability to short-term features and lower upfront costs. Modern machines packed with electronic sensors and computerized systems are more prone to failure than their simpler, more robust predecessors.

Cheap + Old > Expensive + New for reliability. My relative owns several rentals โ€” best bet is the local used appliance depot.

The machines we sell at Longhorn aren't junk someone threw away โ€” they're proven workhorses from an era when appliances were actually built with metal parts, replaceable components, and mechanical simplicity. We test every single one before it leaves our shop.

Big Brands Sell You a Box.
We Find You the Right Machine.

Walk into a big-box store and you'll get a 19-year-old sales associate reading specs off a card. They don't know the difference between a direct drive and a belt drive. They don't know that the $1,400 front-loader they're pushing has a sealed drum you can't repair. They don't care โ€” they get paid the same whether the machine lasts 2 years or 20.

We're different. We refurbish and sell these machines ourselves. We know every brand, every model, and every common failure point. When you text us or walk into our shop, we ask questions first: How big is your household? Do you have gas or electric hookups? What's your budget? We match you to the right set โ€” not the most expensive one.

As someone who used to design washing machines for a living, I say go with a base model top loader and matching dryer set. They have a lot fewer parts, are much easier to fix, and you don't have to worry about leaks, smells, etc.
๐Ÿ’ก
Older washers and dryers were built with higher quality parts for longer lifespans and fewer repairs. Without the excessive fancy features of new models, you are free of complicated and expensive repairs.

That "10-Year Warranty" Covers
the One Part That Almost Never Breaks.

This is the one that really gets us. Walk into any appliance store and they'll proudly tell you about the "10-year motor warranty" on their LG or Samsung machine. Sounds incredible, right? Here's what they're not telling you:

๐Ÿ“‹ What the "10-Year Warranty" actually means:

LG washers come with 1 year of full parts and labor coverage. After that first year, the only component still covered is the direct drive motor โ€” parts only, no labor. The drum gets 3 years (parts only). Everything else? You're paying out of pocket.

Samsung is nearly identical: 1 year full coverage, then extended warranty only on the motor and stainless steel tub. Everything else โ€” control boards, bearings, seals, pumps, door locks, sensors โ€” is on you after 12 months.

Sources: ConsumerAffairs โ€” LG Warranty ยท Samsung Warranty Breakdown

Now here's the kicker: the motor is one of the least likely parts to fail. The parts that actually break โ€” the ones that send people running back to the store for a new machine โ€” are the ones the warranty doesn't cover.

Component How Likely to Fail? Repair Cost Covered After Year 1?
๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Control Board / Electronics Very Common (#1 failure) $150 โ€“ $400 NOT COVERED
โš™๏ธ Drum Bearings Very Common (wear item) $175 โ€“ $400+ NOT COVERED
๐Ÿ”˜ Door Seal / Gasket Common (front-loaders) $230 โ€“ $300 NOT COVERED
๐Ÿ’ง Drain Pump Common $150 โ€“ $300 NOT COVERED
๐Ÿ”ฉ Shock Absorbers / Springs Common (front-loaders) $50 โ€“ $200 NOT COVERED
๐Ÿ”„ Transmission Moderate $200 โ€“ $350 NOT COVERED
โšก Direct Drive Motor Rare $250 โ€“ $400 PARTS ONLY, NO LABOR

Repair cost data from Fixr.com. Failure frequency from industry repair analysis.

Let that sink in. The warranty that looks like a decade of protection is really just 12 months of real coverage โ€” and after that, you're looking at $150โ€“$400 repair bills for the stuff that actually goes wrong. On a machine you already spent $800โ€“$1,400 on.

Meanwhile, a refurbished set from Longhorn costs $400โ€“$850 total โ€” delivered and installed. If something goes wrong, the repair on an older, mechanically simple machine is cheaper too, because you're replacing belts and pumps โ€” not circuit boards and sealed drums.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ What the FTC says about warranties:

The Federal Trade Commission warns consumers to carefully examine warranty coverage before buying, noting that many warranty plans cover only partial costs, have hidden deductibles, and may duplicate coverage you already have. They advise checking for limitations on reimbursement amounts and whether the claims process is difficult or slow.
